trip to the zoo

I had the pleasure of having Macey and Kelsey all to myself for a while yesterday. Jen went out with Lisa (sister in law) to get some things to help "stage" their house as the realtor was coming later at night. When Macey woke up from her nap I packed them up and headed for John Ball Park Zoo. I was a little nervous about having both girls in the car all by myself. My biggest fear was that Kelsey would start crying in the car and I wouldn't know what to do. We made it about 5 minutes before she let loose. I tried singing to her which did not work. I thought maybe she would stop crying after a few minutes but she did not so I pulled into a bank parking lot. As soon as I squeezed my butt in between the 2 car seats she stopped crying and had big smiles for me. I gave her a little more of her bottle and told her she couldn't cry anymore. We were good for another 2 minutes or so and then the crying started again. I didn't know what else to do besides sing and talk to her. Her car seat was behind me so it was such a helpless feeling not to even be able to see her. Thank goodness Macey did not seem to be phased by all of the crying. I felt so bad for Kelsey and was afraid I had pinched her skin in the carrier or something! Anyway, we made it to the zoo and my good friend Lisa met us there a couple of minutes later. Thanks goodness. It's tricky getting both kids out of car seats, buckled into strollers, making sure we have the bottles, diapers, etc, and keeping a watch out for oncoming cars in the parking lot. I don't see how 1 person could go out and about with more than 1 (little) kid at a time. Jen, Elizabeth, and Erin (and any other moms reading this with young kids)I admire you! Maybe it just gets easier with practice. We had lots of fun at the zoo. Macey said her favorite was the camel although she did not want to take a ride on one. "Just look, not touch". She didn't really want to get very close to any of the animals and had a pretty good scare when a baby goat came up behind her in the petting zoo. She also did not like it was the grizzly bear jumped into the water to cool off and was also terrified of the penguins for some reason. I shouldn't be one to talk since my mom told me I was scared of just about everything when I was little (and Jen was not). Macey liked to wave good-bye to every animal and also comment on "how cute" all of the baby animals were. She is turning into such a sweet little girl and is becoming so good with all of her "please, thank-yous, and you're welcomes". I think Kelsey enjoyed herself at the zoo as well but was much happier out of her carrier. I can't blame her as it was so warm yesterday and she wanted to see what was going on too!

Our neighbor Charles wanted to take Keith and I out for dinner since he will be moving down to N. Carolina in 2 weeks (everyone is leaving us!) We went to Wally's in Saugatuck. It was very good. Saugatuck is such a cool place in the summer. I love the atmosphere. We ate outside and the weather was perfect. Keith had some of the best perch he has ever eaten. I made sure the outdoor TVs were turned to FSN so we could watch the Tiger game. (2 in a row for them now!) We sat and people watched from the patio at Wally's for a while. There are some good ones down there! It was especially busy down there with the Film Festival going on the weekend. We went to Kilwin's to get ice cream. I got banana fudge pie. Yum. We took our ice cream and admired all of the enormous boats. A very fun day!

Thanks again for taking Macey and Kelsey, it was a huge help. It does get easier with practice. That was a long but hopefully fun day for you. The ice cream flavor does sound good!

Okay...I'm sold on Saugatuck! It looks like so much fun. Also, I think you give me too much credit with the kid thing. It doesn't always go smoothly when you try to take them both out by yourself. But, like Jenny said, it does get easier because you figure out little tricks (for example...suckers!).

We went to Saugatuck today! We had lunch at Pumpernickels (they were do sweet, they put a candle in my sister's hamburger for her b-day!) and shopped and looked at all the boats!
